Week 1 research and idea generation

Research into the theme

Above is a mood board that I created whilst researching sci-fi and there is a wide range of different things from sci-fi horror like alien to Star wars a series about an intergalactic war. These are what I looked at the beginning of the project. Below you will see my descriptions of each of the examples used.

Star wars is about an intergalactic war set many years in the past where there are Jedi and Sith that fight in order to take control of the galaxy and decide the destiny of the force. Battles are fought all around the galaxy with some grand space battles with hundreds of star fighters or on the ground using laser rifles known as blasters. Some of these people are known as Jedi fight with lightsabers that are different colours and they are fighting for the light side of the force so the good guys and those with red lightsabers fight are Sith fighting for destruction and power. There are also grand armies that depend on the era of star wars so the clone army vs the droid army during the clone wars or the rebel alliance vs the empire during the galactic civil war. All of this is done in order to bring balance to the force and have peace within the galaxy.

They also travel the galaxy in search for these kyber crystals to use for fuels for devastating weapons like the death star or weapons used to keep peace like the weapon of the Jedi. Or for example star killer base uses solar power and absorbs suns in order to the destroy planets.

Humanity is on its last legs as a war between the people of the planet Sera and a race of creatures known as the Locust. Its down to delta squad to try and win the war for the COG (the coalition of ordered governments). You play as Marcus Fenix as you fight across sera. The war is the result of the humans harvesting the resource called Imulsion a fuel source that is bright yellow and highly deadly to humans this is used to power the COG empire. Marcus will need to fight through what feels like an endless amount of dangers in order to vanquish the locust horde and save humanity as him and delta squad are humanities last hope.

Guardians of the galaxy is about a man called peter quill who travels across the galaxy as star lord and along his journey he meet Drax, Groot, rocket the racoon and Gamora and thy form the guardians of the galaxy they save the universe from a power tyrant Ronan the accuser who is using the power of the power stone to try to rule the galaxy. The power stone being an infinity stone an item of immense power.

In alien the crew of the Nostromo wake up from cryo-sleep after getting a distress signal from a ship. After further investigation an alien face hugger puts one of the crew members into a comer and later an alien bursts out of his chest and then grows into a horrifying beast and Ripley is forced to escape from the monstrous alien in a desperate means for survival.

In Detroit become human you play as 3 different androids these are Connor a police detective, Markus an android carer and Kara a maid android. Through out the game you will see a battle to try and get rights for androids and your actions as a player decide how it goes and the overall fate of the 3 characters. With each choice made being vital and crucial to the characters survival and each choice could also lead to the character dying and being dead permanently. The fate of the robot revolution is in your hands.

Environment

Above is a mind map of different environments and what would be required to survive in each of the different environments. I did this so when I create my asset it will be set in one of these different environments and this will mean that I will have to add features to it that will ensure that it isn't damaged or greatly affected by these different environments. I will have to take this into consideration whilst designing my different assets.

Asset ideas

Above is a mind map of my different idea these are the ideas I will develop a little bit more before I finally choose one as my final asset each of these ideas will have mood board and a mind map accompanying them below with more information on each.

Spaceship sprite sheet

Above is the mind map that I used whilst making the key features behind my spaceship that I will turn into a sprite sheet this has things like the purpose of the ship, the aesthetic, its education factor in relation to STEM and some examples of some spaceships from within the sci-fi theme. Below is a mood board that I made with some examples and what I took from each.

Here is a mood board of existing spaceships within sci-fi and why I chose them I chose these 3 specifically as I thought that specific features of these spaceships fit with the theme that I am going for with my design. Read above to get more detail on why I chose each of the 3 ships.

Alien sprite sheet

Above is my mind map for my alien sprite this goes into detail about how the alien is going to be on a world that is cold so its in a tundra environment. It also contains other information like the aesthetic of the alien, its educational facts, its purpose and some examples like the Xenomorph. Below is the mood board for the alien with some examples of different types of alien.

Above is my mood board of different aliens with the reasons that I have chosen them as you can see I mainly looked at some of the Star wars aliens like the Wookies and the Rodians but I also used the Xenomorph from the movie alien.

Heater 3D model

Above is the mind map that I made for my 3d heater that would be used in a tundra environment to keep warm. This explains how it would be used on a different planet and how it turns hydrogen into fuel in order to carry on heating them and how it is split from the ice. Below is my mood bard with a range of heaters and why I chose them.

The mood board above contains different heaters and why I would use them for example I pointed out the colour scheme of the heater from Warframe as it fits the sci-fi theme. I used the other 2 for the actual design and shape of the heater and how I use these feature whilst actually creating my heater.

Game mechanic

Above is my mind map of my game mechanic which is collecting fuel to power a spaceship in order to get from level to level. This therefore leads onto my mood board that I made for the mechanic.

Above is the mood board for my game mechanic and this is taking key features from other games and saying how I would implement them and use them whilst making my mechanic. For example how you have to collect things in order to go to the next level.

Questions

I made a questionnaire with different questions and these are my results this is the first question and as you can see the one people wanted me to do the least was the alien sprite sheet and the one they wanted me to do the most was a draw between the space ship sprite sheet and 3D model of a heat generator. So I will chose to do one of those two.

Above is the reasoning to why people chose their answers.

Everyone thought that it could be completed within the time limit which is 2 weeks.

Above is what people would like to see that I haven't suggested already.

This question was about which environment my asset should be present in so it would require the features of the environment in order for it to function properly.

Above is the reasoning behind why people chose each environment most of these being dependent on their answers to the first question.

The last 4 questions were asking about if the ideas fit within the main points of the brief so does it fit with the theme, does it provide an insight to STEM, does it sound like something that a 14-21 year old would find interesting and if it applies to the overall project brief.

SWOT chart

Above is my SWOT chart that I made that has my Strengths and weaknesses. Throughout the project I am going to improve my ability to form ideas and I will improve my ability to create concepts from idea that I am working on. I will also improve my ability to stay on task and not get distracted by the things going on around. I will do these things by using the time given to do the tasks related to these things wisely and by setting myself targets throughout.

Risk assessment

Above is my risk assessment with potential risks and how likely they are to happen as well as what would happen if they were to occur. If any of these things were to occur I would have to replace what has broken or redo what I had lost during this or catch up depending if I was ill.

Gantt chart

Above is my Gantt chart and what I plan on doing in each day. This is based on what we have been given to do on each week so I have split them up into tasks and allocated a specific amount of days to each task. However I could finish the tasks within that time frame meaning I could finish the weeks work early.
